Anonymous surveys

Unlink responses from people while still tracking who has answered.

Turn on Anonymous responses in a survey's Settings tab before the first response arrives. Once answers exist, the setting locks, so nobody's answers are exposed or orphaned later.

What changes

  • Each response gets a random id instead of being linked to the person who sent it.
  • Times on responses and participants are kept to the day, not the minute.
  • Results hide any group of fewer than 5 people, and mask that group's size rather than showing a small number.
  • The Responses view and every export never show identity or any per-row detail.
  • Participants are still marked as answered, so reminders keep working correctly.
  • Unfinished answers are never tied to a person on our servers: a personal link keeps them in the person's own browser, and drop-off shows counts only.
Hiding a small group is not enough on its own, because you could work it out by taking everyone and subtracting the groups that are shown. So when one hidden group could be worked out that way, the next smallest group is hidden too. Even so, people in a group just over the limit can sometimes be guessed from what you already know about the team, so think before you share comparisons of small groups.
